Description:
The man who came up with the name Boss 302 was stylist Larry Shinoda. The Boss 302, introduced in 1969, was Ford's answer to Camaro Z/28 in SCCA TransAm racing series. Although the 1969 Boss 302 showed a lot of promise by winning the first 3 out of 5 races, it won no more races that year.
However, in 1970, with drivers Parnelli Jones and George Follmer, Boss 302 dominated TransAm with 6 wins, 5 seconds, and 4 thirds, culminating in Parnelli Jones winning the driver championship.
Rated at 290 HP, the Boss 302 was actually putting out closer to 350 HP with race versions making 450 Horse’s at over 8,000 RPM. 1970 was the year before Ford’s decade of Total Performance drew to a close which now makes these race bred vintage Mustangs one of the most Collectible Muscle Cars of all time.
THIS PARTICULAR 1970 BOSS 302 REPRESENTS AN EXTREMELY RARE OPPORTUNITY TO ACQUIRE ONE OF THESE TREASURED CLASSICS, and its options are authenticated by the Marti Auto report shown below.
When we began this restoration, we put all of our money (over $50,000) into making sure the body of the car was perfect.
This Boss 302 body is straight and in outstanding condition. As you can clearly see, there is no rust and the paint and all body panels are in exceptional condition. - TOP & BOTTOM. CHROME, TRIM AND GLASS - ALL IN OUTSTANDING CONDITION. The car has new 15x8” Mag 500s. The center caps are a new style that attach from behind with screws (No more lost center caps!). The car sits nice on Goodyear Polyglas F60x15 tires that have been balanced. The car has also been professionally laser aligned. This car has new brakes all around, as well as new front calipers. The rear has been rebuilt with 31 spline axles and nodular case.
INTERIOR SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. Beautifully redone, and in excellent condition. The original retracting seatbelts have been replaced with “Running Mustang” seatbelts. The original Philco AM radio is in great working condition. The heater core is brand new. The horn works. All turn signals and lights work. There is a new turn signal switch.
The Bright Yellow Paint has been painted with DuPont ChromaOne urethane enamel. This baby really shines! The trunk, hood stripes, rear spoiler, tail panel, and sport slats have been correctly painted with PPG Textured Black paint. This Boss was finished off with a new stripe kit.
This Boss 302 was produced December 23, 1969 in Dearborn, Michigan.
The engine is a correctly date-coded Boss 302 engine. It has been fully rebuilt with roller rocker arms. The distributor (not original) has been rebuilt, with a Pertronix electronic ignition, so there will never be any points to adjust! A dual vacuum advance was added to make it look just like the original Boss distributor. It has a brand new “yellow top” coil. It has concourse correct spark plug wires. A new wiring harness was added from the firewall forward. This Boss also has a new radiator, water pump and fuel pump, and the CORRECT BOSS CARBURETOR & INTAKE. We installed the “Boss correct” fan and oversized pulley on the new alternator. This is one of the best running Boss engines I’ve seen and it has been built to run a long time. Please watch the video and listen to the wonderful sound. Using the big-valve, big-port heads from the not-yet-introduced Cleveland engine series, the Boss 302 engine was a screamer par excellence. THE ORIGINAL CLOSE RATIO TRANSMISSION HAS ALSO BEEN REBUILT AND SHIFTS SMOOTHLY through all the gears.
IT WOULD TAKE VERY LITTLE TO BRING THIS CAR TO A NUMBER 1 CONDITION WHERE SIMILAR BOSS 302’S HAVE BEEN BRINGING $80,000 TO $90,000 AT RECENT AUCTIONS.
TO MAKE THIS BOSS 302 CONCOURSE CORRECT, THE ARE ONLY A COUPLE OF MISSING ITEMS YOU WILL NEED TO ADD SUCH AS A REV LIMITER, CORRECT DUAL POINT DISTRIBUTOR, ORIGINAL SEAT BELTS, ORIGINAL SHAKER ASSEMBLY, AND A SPACE SAVER TIRE IN THE TRUNK. THE CURRENT SHAKER IS A FIBERGLASS REPRODUCTION.
IT IS AN OUTSTANDING INVESTMENT FOR THE DISCERNING COLLECTOR OR AUTOMOTIVE HOBBYIST.
The appearance of this Boss 302 reflects the options on the invoice: Shaker, Rear spoiler, sport slats, Traction-Lok differential, AM radio. The transmission is a close-ratio Top Loader to complement the 3.91:1 final-drive ratio. You could add other options if you like, but it is optioned correctly as it came from the factory.
We think the results of this restoration have brought this Boss to as near brand-new as possible. It isn’t often that you see a ’70 Boss 302 Mustang as nice as this one.
If you want to know what one is supposed to look like, here it is. This is the genuine article. Bid with confidence.
